Huddersfield Wind Band is a community concert band led and directed by Mr. John Turnbull. This established ensemble has 52 members and are based at Salendine Nook in Huddersfield. HWB, founded by the late Adrian Baxter, celebrated its 40th anniversary in June 2026.

Huddersfield Wind Band performs a wide range of music from different genres including film, stage, and contemporary works for symphonic wind orchestra. Furthermore, they perform regularly at a variety of concert halls, churches, bandstands and private functions. For the last 2 years HWB have performed an outstanding concert at the prestigious Selby Abbey, raising money for both the Abbey and HWB. They will perform at Selby Abbey again next year. The band have performed joint concerts with several other ensembles including the National Flute Orchestra, The Yorkshire Imperial Brass Band and more recently Bradford Concert Band.

As a highly experienced director, arranger and performer John Turnbull led HWB to achieve Platinum status at the National Concert Band regional events for the past three years. Subsequently, HWB achieved Gold awards in 2024 and 2025 at the national event and in April 2026 achieved the highest status, Platinum award.

Adjudicator, Gerard Booth congratulated Huddersfield Wind Band on their choice of repertoire and performance:

‘This band goes from strength to strength executing a most enjoyable concert with virtuosic playing’.

Huddersfield Wind Band is a combination of wonderful solo playing as well as a blended and balanced sound and as a whole ensemble, consistently deliver a well-crafted performance at concerts. A performance from this established and talented group of musicians should certainly not be missed.
